Winter Solstice Swim 2025

Nearly 1,500 brave souls will strip down and take the plunge at Hobart’s annual Winter Solstice Swim, held at Long Beach at sunrise on Saturday 21 June 2025.

This chilly Derwent River tradition—part of the Dark Mofo festival—marks the return of light following the winter solstice.

Free registration is currently fully booked, if you still wish to participate, check the official website as resale tickets may become available.

Property Of The Week

This freshly painted three-bedroom home at 24 Culloden Avenue, Lutana, is ideal for first home buyers or small families.

It features a stylishly renovated kitchen, updated laundry and bathroom, and sun-filled open-plan living that flows onto a large entertaining deck.

With low-maintenance gardens, extra shed storage, and a location just 10 minutes from Hobart’s CBD, it’s a move-in ready gem offering comfort, convenience, and modern appeal in a popular suburb.

Fox Friday Brewery Acquisition

Nearly two weeks after entering voluntary administration, Hobart’s Fox Friday Brewing has been acquired by New South Wales–based Mountain Culture Beer Co.

The deal, announced June 17, sees the Hobart taproom rebranded as Mountain Culture Hobart in July, with most staff retained.

The acquisition also includes Fox Friday’s Melbourne, Perth and Moonah venues.

Co-founders DJ and Harriet McCready are keen to nurture local communities and roll out collaborations, as Mountain Culture expands its national presence.

Pet Of The Week

Peta, a four‑year‑old greyhound, is one of the dogs currently awaiting adoption at Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania’s Hobart shelter.

Calm and ready for a loving home, Peta can be viewed by appointment—walk-ins are not available, as visit slots are limited to reduce stress on the dogs .

If you’re interested, bookings can be made on the day or up to two days ahead. Could Peta bring warmth to your home?

Tributes For Fallen Police Officer

Tasmania has been shaken by the tragic death of 57-year-old Constable Keith Anthony Smith, a 25-year veteran of Tasmania Police, who was fatally shot on Monday while serving a court‑ordered warrant at a rural property in North Motton.

The first officer killed in the line of duty in over a century, Constable Smith’s loss prompted heartfelt community tributes—flowers and messages at police stations and online memorials—and Tasmania plans a full police funeral in his honour.
