Recycle Rewards Hits 7 Million

Tasmania’s Recycle Rewards program has hit a major milestone, with over seven million drink containers returned in its first month.

Launched on May 1, the scheme offers a 10-cent refund for each eligible container, encouraging residents to recycle and reduce litter.

Devonport leads in returns, followed by Claremont, Bridgewater, Kingston, and Glebe Hill.

With more than 85% of Tasmanians now within 10 km of a collection point, the program is making recycling more accessible than ever.

Restaurant Of The Week

The Astor Grill, set in a charming 1920s Art Deco building on Macquarie Street, is a Hobart favourite for refined yet relaxed dining.

Celebrated for showcasing local Tasmanian produce, the menu features standouts like steak tartare and the signature ‘Steak 157’ with wild mushroom and cognac cream sauce.

An extensive wine list complements the dishes beautifully. With vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options plus attentive service, Astor Grill delivers a memorable experience for locals and visitors alike.

Tasmanian Film Premiere Sellout

Tasmanian-made film Ancestry Road has captivated audiences, selling out its Hobart premiere at the State Cinema following a successful Melbourne debut.

Directed by Glenn Triggs, the heartfelt drama was shot over 17 days in Tasmania’s Midlands, with Oatlands and Bowhill Grange doubling as the Scottish Highlands.

The film features a mix of seasoned actors and newcomers, including retired chef Bill Munro in a leading role.

A digital release is set for June 12 on platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video.

Nature Strip Plant Giveaway

Hobart City Council is giving away 4,000 free plants to encourage residents to garden on their nature strips.

Each household can apply for up to 20 plants over the next four weeks (or until they run out).

This follows the end of a managed program, where the council maintained grass strips between the footpath and road.
