Qantas Base Closure

Qantas will close its Hobart crew base, alongside Mildura and Canberra, despite fierce opposition from staff, unions and politicians.

The airline says consolidating crews at major airports will boost reliability, with support offered for those commuting.

But the Transport Workers Union warned the move would “split families apart,” with many pilots considering leaving the airline.

Critics argue Tasmania is being left behind, as Qantas posts near-record $2.39b profits while cutting local jobs.

New Land Offering

The first lots in Kingborough’s massive new Huntingfield subdivision are set to hit the market before year’s end.

Homes Tasmania confirmed 33 lots will be released in the initial stage, with titles now being finalised.

A further 170 lots will follow from early 2026.

The development will ultimately deliver around 460 lots across 34 hectares, including social and affordable housing, a commercial business zone, and extensive open space, with essential infrastructure already installed.

Stolen Motorcycles Seized

A high-visibility traffic blitz in Rokeby has netted multiple offenders, including a driver who blew 0.152 and immediately lost his licence for 12 months.

Police also seized two stolen motorcycles, caught two motorists driving with suspended licences, and issued four positive drug tests.

A further 12 defect notices and eight infringements were handed out after 150 random breath tests on Tollard Drive.

"We've got a letter saying we're getting $203,000 for the Hobart area with effect from 1 October, which is about a 50 per cent cut. And next year, it then drops to $132,000 for the Hobart area,"
