Mac Point Stadium Concerns

The Tasmanian Planning Commission has delivered a major blow to the Macquarie Point stadium project, recommending it should not proceed.

The panel found the $945 million venue would saddle the state with $1.8 billion in debt within a decade, while offering limited community benefits and “very significant” heritage impacts.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff insists the report underestimates the stadium’s value and vowed to keep fighting, while independent MP Kristie Johnston called on the government to accept the refusal and move on.

Taste Of Summer Stallholder Reveal

Tasmania’s biggest food and drink festival, the Taste of Summer, returns to Hobart’s waterfront from December 27 to January 3, with early bird tickets going on sale next week.

A new Locals Taste Pass will offer discounted entry across the festival, excluding New Year’s Eve. Last year’s event drew nearly 90,000 attendees with sold-out sessions and almost 300 local performers.

Stallholder and program details are now live, with NYE lineup announcements to follow.

Mental Health Facility To Close

Tasmania’s only large-scale private mental health facility, the Hobart Clinic, will close its 27-bed inpatient site in Rokeby by the end of October after 40 years. Acting CEO Dr Stephen Ayre said the clinic faced a projected $3 million deficit, citing low private health fund reimbursements and rising patient gap fees. The closure leaves patients and staff in limbo, sparking warnings from unions and former patients that Tasmania’s public system cannot meet the demand.
