Labour Backing New Stadium
Tasmanian Labor has confirmed it will support the $945 million Macquarie Point stadium, calling it a “necessary requirement” to secure the state’s AFL and AFLW teams.
Leader Josh Willie said the project would create jobs and opportunities for young Tasmanians, while vowing to closely monitor costs and timelines.
The decision comes days after the Tasmanian Planning Commission recommended the stadium not proceed, citing financial and heritage concerns.
Parliament will ultimately decide on approval.

New Matilda Owners?
Hobart City Council is considering transferring ownership of the 140-year-old fishing boat Matilda to the Tasmanian Maritime Museum after years of mounting upkeep costs.
Moored at Constitution Dock since 1999, the historic vessel has cost ratepayers up to $26,000 annually in insurance and maintenance.
If approved, restoration will be carried out by the Wooden Boat School at Franklin, employing apprentice shipwrights before returning the vessel to the dock.
The council will contribute $25,000 towards restoration.
Concerns Over Hobart Clinic Closure
The closure of the Hobart Clinic next month will leave hundreds without vital inpatient mental health support, with psychiatrists warning lives are at risk.
Patients who relied on the clinic’s safe environment and programs like DBT face being pushed into Tasmania’s already overstretched public system.
Access to treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation will also shrink, with only limited private providers remaining.
Clinicians are urging urgent government consultation, warning the fallout could be “catastrophic.”
