Hobart Wild Weather

Tasmanians are still recovering after damaging winds swept across Hobart on Sunday night, cutting power to nearly 2,800 homes.

Gusts reached 102km/h in the CBD and an intense 145km/h on kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Power outages hit Blackmans Bay, Bonnet Hill, Kingston and Kingston Beach.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned conditions would worsen into Monday and Tuesday, with rain, thunderstorms and snow to 900m.

TasNetworks crews have been working to restore services.

Restaurant Of The Week

Located at 327 Argyle Street, North Hobart, The Waggon celebrates Tasmania’s finest paddock-to-plate produce with a modern twist.

From Cape Grim beef to Bruny Island oysters, every dish is crafted with care and local flavour.

Guests can enjoy the stylish restaurant, relaxed bistro, private accommodation, or the lively beer garden.

With warm hospitality and a focus on sustainability, The Waggon is a must-visit destination for dining, events, or simply unwinding in style.

Crackdown On Hoons

Tasmania Police have launched Operation Full Stop in Risdon Vale and Clarendon Vale to combat persistent hooning.

Using drones, trail bikes and targeted patrols, police aim to catch offenders “in the act” at known hotspots.

Inspector Andrew Keane said residents were “sick and tired” of reckless driving, which he likened to “firing a bullet down a street”.

Police warned offenders risk losing their cars as part of the crackdown.

New Retirement Village Planned

Christian Homes Tasmania has submitted plans for a 44-unit retirement village at Lot 555 Alfreds Garden in Kingston.

The $110m provider already operates aged care facilities across Kingborough and has approval for a neighbouring aged care home.

The proposal includes duplexes, a community hub with shared lounge, kitchen and library, and conservation of 2.16 hectares of bushland.

Some high-value trees would be removed, with $213,000 in offsets. Public submissions close September 26.

Charges For Jewellery Smash And Grab

A 33-year-old man has been charged over the July jewellery store smash-and-grab in Hobart’s Murray Street, but the stolen watches and rings remain missing.

Thieves forced entry around 2am, smashing through the shopfront before fleeing with jewellery, and torching a stolen car on Collins Street.

Detectives tracked the alleged offender after weeks of searches, seizing items but not the missing jewellery.

The man faces burglary, stealing and vehicle theft charges in court this November.
