Busy Highway Closure

Hobart drivers face major delays from October 1 as the Domain Highway and Queens Walk close for TasWater’s $350 million sewerage pipeline project.

The 10-day closure will allow a new 4.3km pipeline to connect Macquarie Point and Selfs Point, replacing Hobart’s aging Macquarie Point plant.

Traffic will be diverted via the Brooker Highway, with delays of up to 15 minutes expected.

Once complete, the project will improve Derwent River health and unlock waterfront land for redevelopment.

Earthquake Hits Southern Tasmania

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake shook southern Tasmania at 6:38am on Thursday, with tremors felt as far north as Devonport.

The quake’s epicentre was near Lake Pedder, 14km deep in the state’s south-west.

More than 75 residents reported feeling homes and beds rattle, though no damage has been recorded.

Hydro Tasmania engineers inspected Gordon Power Station and Edgar Dam, confirming assets were unaffected.

Experts say the risk of damage from a quake of this size is extremely low.

Stadium Hospitality Reveal

New images of Hobart’s proposed Macquarie Point stadium reveal world-class hospitality spaces designed to rival Australia’s best venues.

Premium ticket holders will enjoy tailored bars, lounges and a versatile function room seating up to 1,500 people, with sweeping views of kunanyi/Mt Wellington and the field.

Operable walls allow three events at once, making the venue ideal for conferences, festivals, and community celebrations.

Leaders say it’s about much more than sport—boosting tourism and events.

New Hotel Tower On Sandy Bay Rd

Council has approved a 51-room hotel atop the historic Masonic lodge on Sandy Bay Road near Davey Street.

The 51-metre tower will rise above the largely preserved lodge and include a rooftop bar. Conditions require heritage safeguards, parking management and operating limits (bar shut by midnight, music indoors).

Proponents say it will help ease Hobart’s accommodation shortfall and take pressure off residential Airbnbs; nearby owners raised concerns about noise and traffic.
