Full Stadium Costing?

Parliament has backed a motion requiring the government to release full cost estimates for the proposed $945 million Macquarie Point stadium before MPs vote.

Independent Kristie Johnston pushed for transparency, with Labor supporting via amendments.

Treasurer Eric Abetz warned delays could add 5% per year, but Labor leader Josh Willie stressed the need for accountability.

The Tasmanian Planning Commission will hand down its report on September 17, with parliament to decide the project’s fate.

Property Of The Week

1/10 Yachtsmans Way, Tranmere. This stylish townhouse offers spectacular water and mountain views, sun-filled living and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

The open-plan upper level features polished floors, a sleek kitchen with island bench, and a large sundeck perfect for entertaining.

Three bedrooms and three bathrooms provide flexibility, while the double garage with internal access adds convenience.

With playgrounds, foreshore trails, beaches, and Hobart’s CBD just minutes away, this home balances lifestyle and location.

New Cancer Wellness Centre

Hobart City Council has approved a $24 million redevelopment of the heritage-listed former Theatre Royal Hotel on Campbell Street into the SHE Cancer Wellness Centre.

Backed by $20m in government and philanthropic funding, the four-storey facility will feature consulting rooms, 11 accommodation units for patients and carers, and communal health spaces.

Chair Scott Harris said the project, due in 2027, will fill a critical gap in Tasmanian cancer support, reducing the need for interstate travel.

Illegal Vape Sting

Five Hobart retail businesses have been caught with commercial quantities of illegal vapes during a two-day enforcement operation by the TGA, Department of Health and Tasmania Police.

Authorities seized large amounts of vapes and tobacco, part of a national crackdown that has already removed over 12 million illegal vapes worth $600m.

Under current laws, vapes can only be supplied via pharmacies with a prescription. Retailers face multimillion-dollar fines or even prison for breaches.

Richmond Maze Sold To Overseas Buyer

One of Tasmania’s most iconic attractions, the Richmond Maze, has been sold to an international buyer after strong local and global interest.

Located at 13 Bridge Street, the property features two unique mazes, landscaped gardens, and a café/restaurant.

Ray White Commercial Tasmania said the distinctive freehold asset, enhanced by recent upgrades, drew strong investor demand.

The new owner is expected to build on its reputation as a key tourism drawcard in the historic town.
