Jellyfish Washed Ashore
Hundreds of moon jellyfish washed ashore at Long Beach in Sandy Bay on Wednesday, covering parts of the shoreline and making it difficult for beachgoers to walk along the sand.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania said the mass stranding is a natural event that occurs when conditions favour rapid jellyfish growth and calm waters allow them to gather near shore.
While the sight was dramatic, moon jellyfish are generally harmless and cause only mild stings if touched.

Salmon Farms Lose Antibiotic Permit
Australia’s veterinary medicines regulator has suspended Tasmania’s salmon farming industry from using the emergency antibiotic florfenicol after traces were detected in wild fish near aquaculture leases.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority said the permit was revoked due to an “unacceptable risk” of antibiotic residue exposure to wildlife.
The emergency permit had been granted in November to help producers manage a disease outbreak in Tasmania’s south-eastern biosecurity zone.

Hobart Harbour Clean Up
Divers removed more than 2,200 invasive Northern Pacific seastars and a range of dumped rubbish from Hobart’s waterfront during an underwater Clean Up Australia event on Sunday.
Around 50 volunteers collected 120 kilograms of the pest species beneath the Port of Hobart in just 90 minutes, while also hauling up e-scooters, shopping trolleys, bikes and other debris.
The clean-up, organised by TasPorts, the University of Tasmania Dive Club and Invasive Seastar Clean Up Tasmania, aims to protect the Derwent’s marine environment from the destructive invasive species.
