Confirmed Measles Case
Tasmania has recorded its first measles case since February 2023, prompting a health alert for several Hobart locations.
An infected person, who arrived from Brisbane on Virgin flight VA1006 last Monday, was admitted to the Royal Hobart Hospital on Saturday.
Exposure sites include Hobart Airport, the YHA hostel on Argyle Street and Woolworths CBD, which the individual visited multiple times between Tuesday and Friday.
Anyone potentially exposed should monitor symptoms for up to 18 days and isolate if unwell, health authorities say.
Employment Focus
Hospital Staff Pay Dispute
Cardiac physiologists and neurophysiology scientists at the Royal Hobart Hospital will hold a one-hour strike today amid a dispute over wages and staffing pressures.
HACSU says the specialists — who perform heart ultrasounds, pacemaker checks and vital nervous-system tests — are the lowest paid in Australia and increasingly overworked.
The union wants Premier Jeremy Rockliff to return to negotiations with a better offer than the current 3% rise.
The government says its offer is fair and notes record elective surgery numbers.

Anti Stadium Protests
Hundreds to thousands of protesters gathered on Parliament Lawns on Sunday to oppose the proposed Macquarie Point stadium, with organisers claiming 7,000 attendees and police estimating about 1,500.
Speakers urged upper house MPs to reject the $1.13 billion project ahead of next month’s decisive vote, warning of debt, planning risks and public service impacts.
Lawyer Greg Barns accused the government of using “Trump-style” tactics to discredit critics.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff defended the project and questioned attendance figures.

Seniors Looking To Downsize Without Compromise
OneCare CEO Peter Williams says Hobart is facing a growing undersupply of high-quality seniors’ housing, with little retirement village development over the past decade.
Speaking at the sod-turning for Barossa Living in Glenorchy, he said today’s seniors want to “downsize without compromise” and maintain independence with strong community connections.
The new development, created with Cykel Architecture, will include 56 purpose-built villas and apartments designed for ageing in place.
