Pledge To Save Jobs At Hobart Zinc Works

Tasmanian Labor has pledged up to $25 million to help secure over 500 jobs at Hobart’s Nyrstar zinc works.

Leader Dean Winter announced the plan to reallocate a previous $20 million commitment and add $5 million if needed, calling the support vital to prevent economic fallout.

The proposal is part of a broader support package being negotiated with federal and South Australian governments, with a final deal expected soon.

Property Of The Week

80 Pindos Drive, Tranmere offers spacious family living with panoramic water and mountain views in one of Hobart’s most sought-after suburbs.

This sunlit home features open-plan living, a modern kitchen, and an undercover alfresco area perfect for year-round entertaining.

With four bedrooms, including a master with ensuite, a secure yard, and internal-access garage, it’s ideal for families.

Located near foreshore trails, schools, and shops—just 20 minutes from the CBD—this property ticks every box.

Hobart Budget For 2025-26

In a year of rising costs, the City of Hobart has handed down a $183.9 million budget focused on community, sustainability, and long-term planning.

With a modest $1 million surplus, key investments include ferry expansion, roads, waste services, parks, and youth programs.

Rates will rise just 3.5%, the lowest in Greater Hobart.

Council says it’s about delivering essential services while shaping a stronger, more resilient city for the future.

Doctor Gets Creative

Hobart pain specialist Dr Gajinder Oberoi is using his creative talents to give back, donating proceeds from his book Stories That Remain Untold and his artwork to the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation.

After nearly 30 years building Tasmania’s specialist pain services, Dr Oberoi is now supporting local medical research through art.

His generosity is helping fund vital health initiatives, continuing a legacy of care, education, and innovation in the Tasmanian community.
